Floorball
Floorball is a fast-paced sport played with 5 players on each side including a goalkeeper. The dimensions of the court is 20m by 40m and the sport is played indoors within a rink made up of plastic boards with one goal post at each end. Players play with sticks typically made up of carbon or composite shafts with a plastic blade at the end. The ball is a hollow plastic ball with 26 holes. A goal is scored when the ball is shot into the goalpost.
Although it is not an Olympic sport and will not feature in this year’s Youth Olympic Games, the sport is experiencing quick growth in popularity simply because it is easy to learn and is very intense and exciting.
Don’t hesitate to approach the SMU Floorball booth during Vivace and our friendly club members will be there to answer any questions about the club or the sport.
Fencing
SMU Fencing started this specialized sport in 2003. Then, there was only a few schools offering this sport as a Co-Curriculum Activity.
Fencing, which requires strategic planning combined with techniques and self-discipline is a sport that suits students as it develops not just the physical component but mental component as well. The objective then was to expose the sports to students. Instead of taking all three weapons (Epee, Foil and Sabre), the club decided to focus on Epee thus allowing quick adaptation to the weapon. This decision paid off as SMU Fencers made their name known in the local fencing scene within a considerably short period. SMU Fencers start picking up medals and developed into a local fencing powerhouse and even won medals abroad.
To contribute to the local fencing scene where there is lack of tertiary competition, SMU Fencing even started organizing the annual Asian Varsity Fencing Championships, a competition that brings together universities in the Asian Pacific region.
SMU Fencing is proud to be one of the few sports clubs supported by the SMU Sporting Excellence Programme.
Flare
Who We Are
SMU Flare is the competitive cheerleading team of SMU. Our mission is to foster the competitive spirit of cheerleading and inculcate a commitment to sporting excellence in all our members. We aim to be an established competitive team in Singapore, known for putting up quality routines.
Cheerleading is a competitive sport based on organized routines, containing components such as tumbling, dance, jumps, cheers and stunts. Founded in 2003, SMU Flare has grown from an all-girl group stunt team to a co-ed team that is capable of putting up performances both in school and for external events. We also represent SMU at national competitions. Everyone in our team, as part of the Flare family, has an important role to play. Just like any other athletic sport, cheerleading fosters teamwork, dedication and life skills that will prepare us for future challenges in life.
What We Do
When you think of cheerleading, the first things that come to mind are arguably pompoms and dancing. While these are an integral part of the cheerleading culture in the West, things are slightly different here at SMU Flare. In Flare, we focus mainly on stunting. Every one of us is committed to excelling in the sport and doing what it takes to keep the stunts up. We put in a 110%, so as to achieve the visual extravaganza that you see.
With the nature of the sport, physical contact is inevitable. Precisely because of this nature, it is paramount to have mutual respect for each other. Everyone in our team respects and trusts that there are boundaries that should not be crossed. Respect for each other is everything in this sport.
Our Achievements
Flare has growing from strength to strength over the past few years, becoming one of the top cheerleading teams in Singapore. In 2010, we took part in the national cheerleading championships, Cheerobics, and obtained a 1st Runner Up position in the Co-ed Group Stunt category and 2nd Runner Up position in the All-Girls Group Stunt category. It was a great start for us, paving the way for more achievements in the years ahead. In 2012, we obtained a 1st Runner Up place in the All-Girls Group Stunt category, and narrowly missed the 2nd Runner Up position in Co-ed Group Stunt category by 1 point. Looking ahead, Flare is determined for an even better placing in 2013.
Apart from our competitive achievements, Flare is also an established team when it comes to putting up quality performances. We lend our support and perform regularly at school events. In 2012 alone, we performed at Convocation, Vivace, Sports Camp, Sports Fiesta, the SMU Shop opening and also conducted workshops during Sports Camp.
Outside of SMU, Flare has also been heavily involved in corporate partnerships. Our recent endeavors include a performance at the Singapore Karting Championships 2012, as well as being involved in the corporate video shoot for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), a "Big Four" accounting firm. These internal and external events are testimonies to the quality of our team.
