Aquathlon

SMU Aquathlon was first conceived in AY2007 by a small team of enthusiastic multi-sport athletes. The general idea was to provide a home for multi-sport athletes in SMU where everyone could share and learn from follow club members, and to introduce to the school population a “seemingly insane” sport that we affectionately refer to as Aquathlon.

So what is an Aquathlon?

An aquathlon is a multi-sport endurance discipline that comprises a continuous swim followed by a run. Major aquathlon-related events locally include the Tribob Sprint Aquathlon. The term “triathlon”, comprising a continuous swim, bike, and run, is more well-known to Singaporeans, including major events like OSIM Triathlon and Aviva Singapore Ironman 70.3. However at the Singaporean educational institute level, the term “aquathlon” is the standard name for this particular CCA.

At SMU Aquathlon, we hone our members’ fitness and technical skills, with more focus on the swim and run. Our annual official race calendar consists of at least one aquathlon (e.g. NUS Aquathlon IVP or SuniG) and at least one triathlon (e.g. Tri-Factor Triathlon). In addition since 2009, with the kind support of OSL, another official multi-sport race will include the Bintan International Triathlon.

As a group, we have decided to call ourselves affectionately as SMURTS. SMURTS is an abbreviation for SMU Turtles – amphibious and steady. This ultimately manifests our belief, that with the right amount of training, knowledge, and determination, anyone would be able to complete an aquathlon or triathlon.

Archery

SMU Archery Club was formed in 2004 by a handful of students with great enthusiasm and love for this sport. Since then, it has grown both in numbers and experience, as its members participate actively in various national championships and IVPs.

Through an annual beginners’ course within SMU to introduce this Olympic sport to anyone with interest, the club has successfully developed many individuals and teams who are completely new to the sports to compete at a national level.

Our Club Mission:

Achieving excellence in all competitions.
Creating awareness of the SMU Archery Club within the SMU as well amongst all tertiary institutions.
Supporting school events actively and making the sport of archery accessible to all within SMU.

Aikido

Aikido is a Japanese martial art with its own unique philosophy, specializing in self-defence. It is an art form that focuses on harmony rather than countering violence with more violence. As such, demonstrations tend to flow smoothly and appear choreographed. But this stems from the greater focus on proper breathing (‘ki’) and coordination with the opponent rather than blunt strikes.

Set up in 2006, SMU Aikido introduced the martial art to the SMU community. The club was established to promote the art, and sought to gather students from all backgrounds. The aim was to foster meaningful bonds between the club members, as well as to instill confidence in skill practice and application. It also seeks to widen the circle of Aikido practitioners within the SMU community.
